Kpop Idols-Relative popularity & likelihood to win #1

inspiritforsungjong:

Since Shelbi got a question asking about whether Big Bang was popular in Korea and we are also discussing the likelihood of Infinite winning for this album…I decided to post this tiering of idol groups by popularity.

Here are the more prominent idol groups split up into tiers based on their approximate popularity in Korea (i.e., not internationally). Relative popularity within each tier also decreases from left to right. DO NOT FREAK OUT ABOUT A RANK UNLESS HAVE READ EVERYTHING. I repeat, READ CAREFULLY.

Guy groups:
Tier 1: Big Bang, 2PM, Super Junior, TVXQ (Homin), JYJ
Tier 2: Beast, CNBlue, SHINee, 2AM, SS501
Tier 3: F.T Island, Infinite, MBLAQ, Teen Top
Tier 4: B1A4, Block B, U-Kiss, Boyfriend

Girl groups:
Tier 1: SNSD, 2NE1, Wonder Girls, T-ara
Tier 2: KARA, f(x), miss A, Sistar, 4minute
Tier 3: Davichi, Secret, Brown Eyed Girls, After School
Tier 4: Rainbow, Girl’s Day, Dal Shabet, 5dolls, A Pink

Other groups are not as classifiable because there’s not enough info and numbers on them to separate them out. In the case of rookies (defined as anyone with 2 or fewer singles so far), the sample size is just too small and it’s too early to tell; they’re prone to shifting quickly.

If you have questions about where I placed a group outright or why I placed one particular group over another, feel free to ask. I won’t publish my response if you ask me not to. But don’t just come to me and say “no way X is more popular than Y”, there is a method to the madness, read my methodology!

I for one am quite surprised at SS501 still being prominent in the K-pop scene.
and i am quite curious to the fact that KARA is in the 2nd tier.
